Thought of the Day - Police Cause Traffic

Police and traffic…
I know that I do a lot on traffic and bad drivers, here’s another one…

Now, the CHP are there to enforce the law and make sure that drivers are driving properly. Diving properly has its own definitions depending on the situation. In most cases, it means that in the fast lane, you are typically going around 75 mph, 10 mph over the allowed speed limit in many areas. But, when there is an officer on the freeway, or even a vehicle that looks like an officers, traffic slows. It slows down in all lanes to about 65 mph and less. This causes a large slowdown and backs vehicles up.

If an officer is in the fast lane, he is probably trying to go to wherever he was going at about 75 mph or more. if you see him approaching, slowing to 65 or even 60 mph in the fast lane is a bad idea. If you are that scared, get out of the way and move to the far right where driving slow is okay.

I think that if you are doing 75 in the fast lane its okay as long as traffic is doing that speed. I have seen many officers on the road being slowed down by the “good driver” brought on by the sight of an officer. You’re just making him mad because now he has to do 63 mph in the fast lane because nobody will pass him and you don’t want to speed in the fast lane. He’s stuck, that is until the lanes on the right slow even more and he has an opening to swerve around your “good driving” behind.

I tend to go the same speed in the fast lane, around 75 mph, and when an officer approaches, closing in, I move out of his way and back once he has passed. If traffic has slowed because of him, I tend to drive around the slow cars and pass everybody up if the space allows, praying that the officer doesn’t get jealous that I am moving forward, causing anger and wanting to pull me over. I have been pretty lucky (knock on wood).

So, my advice to you is to keep driving the way you have been, unless you are doing 80, 85+. In that case, slow to about 75 mph and move out of the officers way if he is still approaching fast. Hopefully he’ll pass you unless you doing 85+ warranted a ticket in his eyes.

If you drive safely and the way you have been, you will get to your destination on time, safely, and be happy when you are not ticketed for doing 75 mph in the fast lane.
